REMINDERS

Hope you all survived the full-length practice test today. Just a couple of reminders:

Tomorrow we will go over the exam and I will be meeting with you one on one to discuss your responses.

In the meantime, you will be working on your midterm project. BRING LAPTOPS TO SCHOOL!

Don't forget that we have a vocabulary quiz tomorrow. You can find a full list of the words under the posting for Chicago Architecture.

Lastly, there will be an early dismissal on Wednesday, February 1st due to the monthly faculty meeting. Class will be dismissed at 1:30.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

We have a full-length TOEFL exam scheduled for tomorrow from 9:30-1:00.

Please be on time for class. You will be dismissed following the completion of the practice exam.

Due to the TOEFL exam, the vocabulary quiz will be postponed until Tuesday.

Cell Phone Safety

Homework for this lesson includes the completion of passages 3 and 4. You should also prepare for the two upcoming quizzes (one on the words from the previous week and the other on the high frequency words from CGT section 1).

Do not skip questions; do your best to answer each one. When you return to class, discuss your responses with those of a partner from class. Great Wall of China Lessons




Here is the link to lesson 1 with definitions. You can also find a link to the lectures from class used in the integrative speaking task here. Homework for lesson one includes: completing your six questions for passage 2 or 3, preparing the presentation, and composing five vocabulary sentences. Please remember that we will also take a quiz on the CGT section 1 words. IF you do not receive an 80% or better on this quiz you must retake it.

We did not complete the podcast, but feel free to listen and try to answer the remaining questions by following the link here. We also covered the rules regarding when to use the present or past participle following a linking verb. You can find a link to some online exercises to practice this here.


Homework includes revisions to returned essays, the expository essay, and to study for the vocabulary quiz on words from last week. You can find a link to the words that will be on the quiz here.


If you missed class and did not give a presentation on Thursday, you must do so next week. This is a 200 point project per student. Failing to give a presentation will significantly harm your final grade.

Before tomorrow, please complete the research assigned to you by your group members and compose a one-paragraph summary of your research results. Tomorrow, you will have class time to meet with your group and create a simple presenation of your findings. We will give presentations on Thursday. There will also be a writing assignment for this project due later in the week.


Finally, please go online and complete these practice exercises on common TOEFL idioms.

DB Cooper Lessons




Here is part 1 of the lesson, which includes definitions. Homework for today is to compose ten vocabulary sentences using any ten unfamiliar words from this lesson. In addition, I would like you to complete the summary writing assignment for passage 3. You can find detailed instructions for the assignment in the handout. There will be no vocabulary quiz tomorrow. However, please take the time to look over the grammar quizzes that were taken and graded today. Come to me tomorrow if you have any questions.

Sigmund Freud Lessons and Grammar Review



Welcome back to school. Yes, today was rough, but it's a new year and that means new possibilities!


Here is part 1 of the lesson on Freud. The first passage was really difficult, but I think the second passage allowed for a clearer understanding of the basic ideas behind his theories.


Here is part 2 of the lesson. You will find a link to the podcast here, which is a reading of Freud's actual essay on dream interpretation. Feel free to work on this for extra practice.


Finally, tomorrow we will have a comprehensive grammar quiz on the concepts we have been working on this block. Here is the study guide for the quiz.
