Education Reform Lessons

These lessons directly address the public education crisis in Chicago.

Here is part 1 of the lesson, which includes definitions and highlights two proposals to reform failing schools in the city. Homework for this lesson is to compose a paragraph in which you argue in favor of one of the proposed reforms. In addition, you are required to compose ten vocabulary sentenes.

Tomorrow we will take a cumulative vocabulary quiz on the words from the Summer Trimester Block 2. Here is a word list to help you study.

Tomorrow we will also take a final grammar exam, which covers the following concepts:

  • Gerunds, Infinitives, and Participles

  • Misplaced Modifiers

  • Creating Participle Sentences

  • Adverb Placement

  • Conditionals

I have made a few minor corrections to the handout I gave you today. Here is the corrected version. The corrections are highlighted in yellow.

Class will begin promptly at 9:00 and end at 12:45. We will spend the day working on TOEFL skills, editing some past work, and discussing your progress on the research project. We will also spend some time discussing the class direction. After class, I would like to invite you to my apartment for lunch. It will take about 30-45 minutes from school to arrive there and you will be responsible for arranging your own transportation. There is inexpensive metered parking available across the street from my building. We will have lunch from about 1:30-3:30. I hope that you will all be able to make it!

  • Write a five paragraph persusive essay on Offshore drilling using the position papers I distributed in class. You can select the reasoning, but you must write from the position that I assigned to you. Work on paraphrasing the arguments made in the handout rather than just repeating them.
  • Study for a vocabulary quiz on Tuesday that covers the lessons on Wikileaks and Offhshore Drilling. You can the vocabulary words and their definitions in the lesson links for Offshore Drilling.
