REMINDERS

Hope you all survived the full-length practice test today. Just a couple of reminders:

Tomorrow we will go over the exam and I will be meeting with you one on one to discuss your responses.

In the meantime, you will be working on your midterm project. BRING LAPTOPS TO SCHOOL!

Don't forget that we have a vocabulary quiz tomorrow. You can find a full list of the words under the posting for Chicago Architecture.

Lastly, there will be an early dismissal on Wednesday, February 1st due to the monthly faculty meeting. Class will be dismissed at 1:30.

Cell Phone Safety



Here is the link to the first part of the lesson, which includes definitions. If you are interested, here is the link to the lecture that accompanies the integrative writing task. Homework for this lesson includes the completion of passages 3 and 4. You should also prepare for the two upcoming quizzes (one on the words from the previous week and the other on the high frequency words from CGT section 1).

Here is the link to the podcast used in part 2 of the lesson. As always feel free to stop and start the podcast as needed to answer the questions. Do not skip questions; do your best to answer each one. When you return to class, discuss your responses with those of a partner from class. Here is a link to part 2 of the lesson, which includes definitions. Homework is to prepare for tomorrow's debate and study for the CGT quiz.

Here is a link to part 3 of the lesson with definitions as well as the related podcast. Over the weekend, use your survey results to formulate a paper in which you present your research results. These should be presented in the structure described in the lesson. In addition, please study for a vocabulary quiz on the new vocabulary from this week. You will find a list of the words, phrases, and idioms that will appear on the quiz here.

DB Cooper Lessons




Here is part 1 of the lesson, which includes definitions. Homework for today is to compose ten vocabulary sentences using any ten unfamiliar words from this lesson. In addition, I would like you to complete the summary writing assignment for passage 3. You can find detailed instructions for the assignment in the handout. There will be no vocabulary quiz tomorrow. However, please take the time to look over the grammar quizzes that were taken and graded today. Come to me tomorrow if you have any questions.

Sigmund Freud Lessons and Grammar Review



Welcome back to school. Yes, today was rough, but it's a new year and that means new possibilities!


Here is part 1 of the lesson on Freud. The first passage was really difficult, but I think the second passage allowed for a clearer understanding of the basic ideas behind his theories.


Here is part 2 of the lesson. You will find a link to the podcast here, which is a reading of Freud's actual essay on dream interpretation. Feel free to work on this for extra practice.


Finally, tomorrow we will have a comprehensive grammar quiz on the concepts we have been working on this block. Here is the study guide for the quiz. Please complete this for homework and come prepared to ask questions tomorrow. If you missed class, or need a little help, please refer to the following class handouts:

End of Block 2

Tomorrow we will take a cumulative vocabulary quiz on the words from the Summer Trimester Block 2. Here is a word list to help you study.

Tomorrow we will also take a final grammar exam, which covers the following concepts:


  • Bare infinitive

  • Gerunds, Infinitives, and Participles

  • Misplaced Modifiers

  • Creating Participle Sentences

  • Adverb Placement

  • Conditionals

I have made a few minor corrections to the handout I gave you today. Here is the corrected version. The corrections are highlighted in yellow.


Here is a study guide to help you prepare for the test. The study guide is optional, but it will help you very much. We will go over the study guide tomorrow before the test.


Some of you still need to take vocabulary quizzes and grammar quizzes. You know who you are. You must do this tomorrow as it is the last day of the term.

MAKE UP CLASS TOMORROW & LUNCH AT MY HOUSE

Hello students, I hope you are enjoying your Spring Break. I just wanted to let you know that we will be having a make up class tomorrow in Glenview to make up for the cancelled class two weeks ago. Class will begin promptly at 9:00 and end at 12:45. We will spend the day working on TOEFL skills, editing some past work, and discussing your progress on the research project. We will also spend some time discussing the class direction. After class, I would like to invite you to my apartment for lunch. It will take about 30-45 minutes from school to arrive there and you will be responsible for arranging your own transportation. There is inexpensive metered parking available across the street from my building. We will have lunch from about 1:30-3:30. I hope that you will all be able to make it!

IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T HEARD, CLASS IS CANCELLED TOMORROW 3/16/11. WE WILL DISCUSS A MAKE UP CLASS ON THURSDAY. PLEASE USE THE DAY OFF TO STUDY FOR YOUR VOCABULARY TEST. Here is a list of all the words that may be on the test. Alternative forms (not listed) may also appear.

YOU MAY ALSO USE THIS TIME TO CATCH UP ON SOME MISSING WORK. Here is a link to my grade records for homework and writing assignments. However, I have not inputted all homework yet. I will not accept missing assignments after Thursday.

The Politics of Marriage - Part 1

  • Passage 2 from the lesson. Please answer the questions.
  • Five vocabulary sentences using any five unfamiliar words from the lesson.

NO VOCAB QUIZ ON MONDAY

I realize that I did not distribute a vocabulary list on Thursday for the quiz on Monday. The quiz will now be postponed until Tuesday and a vocabulary list will be available on Monday in class. Students wishing to take the quiz on Monday may do so during the lunch break.

Also, here is the second part of the film. IF you were not able to complete the second part of the assignment, do not worry. However, you are welcome to watch this section and answer the questions for extra practice.
